Stunning City of the South

When we planned our Christmas trip to New Orleans, I wasn't very excited. I had no idea what an incredible place it is. Growing up in Arkansas it really wasn't THAT far away and yet I never heard much about it...except the usual--Mardi Gras, great partying, Bourbon Street, and crazy things you have to do to get some cheap bead necklaces. I felt that it had little to offer our little family right now. I must say that after a few days there, I have a new love for that amazing city! A place full of complicated culture and history and a charm that I am not sure exists in Texas. (Supposedly there are places but I haven't seen them in the Houston area yet!)  I would go back every year--just to get to know it better.  We probably won't go that often but we will visit again.  There are things we didn't see and do that I will look forward to!  The pictures I posted are meant to give a feel for the city--you won't see a lot of cute pics of the boy but here is one...

We got to go with some great friends from Houston.  They also have a little boy that is the same age as Jackson.  This is what they were doing most of the time!

Jackson's square--a few nights later we took a carriage ride from here.

Really famous for their yummy Beignets

I loved the cafes all over the place.  I haven't been to Paris, but I am pretty sure it is alot like this!

My beautiful dear friend in the Marigny district.

We really enjoyed walking around at night.  The shops were amazing...(sorry--I am saying amazing way to much)

The awesome family we got to hang out with...

Most of our time was spent in the French Quarter.  We actually stayed there, parked our car, and never drove for three days until we left.  The picture above and below was taken in the Garden District.  A place I would definitely like to explore more and maybe even stay in.  There is a trendy little street called Magazine that seems like miles of shops and restaurants.  I could have spent an entire day there.

I feel so lucky we got to spend a few days exploring such a unique place.  It didn't come without challenges--we do have a 2 year old after all but if you ever want to plan a trip there, I would be happy to give some tips and advice.  It is worth it no matter where you live.  BUT if you live in Houston, make sure you visit before you move away.  The drive isn't bad and it is worth it.  It is also very affordable.  There is so much to see and explore that is free you could easily go on a tight $400-$500 budget including food and lodging.
I would love to hear what you enjoy most about the Big Easy!

We were so glad you invited us to tag along. I think this little trip is the beginning of a beautiful travel bud friendship. We had such a nice time, and I am going through Jackie withdrawals, so I think I am going to call you right now. TTYS:)
